1984: HISTÓRIA, FICÇÃO E TOTALITARISMO NO ROMANCE DISTÓPICO

Resumo

O objetivo desse trabalho é apresentar uma análise da complexa relação entre história e ficção representada na obra 1984 de George Orwell. No decorrer da discussão, pretendemos mostrar que o romance distópico proporciona ao leitor uma análise crítica do contexto social e político do século XX e, especificamente, dos regime totalitários que emergiram durante o século. Na obra, o estrito controle exercido pelo governo sobre os textos
históricos e o papel do protagonista Winston Smith enquanto escritor ficcional e historiador problematiza não apenas os mecanismos de manipulação dos fatos sob um regime totalitário, mas também os próprios limites entre história e ficção como representações discursivas da realidade. Assim, tais aspectos trazem as reflexões do autor para o debate mantido por parte
das teorias pós-modernas sobre a chamada metaficção historiográfica.

NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR: HISTORY, FICTION AND TOTALITARISM IN THE DYSTOPIAN NOVEL

The aim of this work is to present an analysis of the complex relation between history and fiction in Nineteen Eighty-Four written by George Orwell. As we proceed, we intended to show that the dystopian novel provides the reader with a critical analysis of the social and political context of the 20th century and, specifically, of the totalitarian regimes
that emerged throughout the century. In the novel, the strict control performed by the government on the historical texts and the role of the protagonist Winston Smith as a fictional writer and a historian questions not only the mechanisms for the manipulation of facts under a
totalitarian regime but also the limits of history and fiction as discursive representations of reality. Thus, such aspects bring the author’s thoughts to the debate held by part of the postmodern theories in relation to the so-called historiographical metafiction.
